Underwriter Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented, thorough, and organized underwriter to join our growing team. As an underwriter, your primary responsibility will be to review applications for insurance and evaluate the degree of risk in accepting individual applications. The ideal candidate for this position is astute, self-assured, decisive, and is able to complete tasks and make decisions independently.
Underwriter Duties and Responsibilities
Evaluate insurance applications and decide whether to provide insurance
Determine coverage amounts and premiums for insurance policies
Screen applicants for insurance based on a predetermined set of criteria
Obtain and examine additional relevant documentation about applicants through communications with field representatives, medical personnel, and others
Analyze applicant information and use reference materials to aid in the determination of risks
Assess and consider recommendations from underwriting software
Decline applicants that demonstrate excessive risks
Evaluate potential losses based on excessive or catastrophe insurance
Decrease the value of policies with substandard risk
Review company records to determine the amount of insurance in force on single risks or groups of risks
Ensure a safe and profitable risk distribution
Underwriter Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in business, economics, finance, mathematics or related field
Prior underwriting experience a plus
Complete professional development and continuing education courses as offered by The American College of Financial Services, The Institutes and The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, such as: Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU),Associate in Personal Insurance (API),Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) certification,Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation,The Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF)
