As a chief nursing officer (CNO), your duties are to organize and plan the development or improvement of a health care facility’s nursing services and, along with managers and coordination officers, implement changes in patient care at the facility. Your other responsibilities include coordinating the daily operations at the facility. This includes reviewing scheduling, conducting performance reviews, reaching out to patients to understand what they perceive as the strengths and weaknesses of the staff, and modifying care provision based on your assessments. You also perform some administrative tasks, such as hiring new nurses and approving budgets.

How Do I Become a Chief Nursing Officer?

To become a chief nursing officer (CNO), you need to be a registered nurse or nurse practitioner and have significant professional experience. Educational qualifications typically include both a bachelor’s in nursing and at least one advanced nursing degree, usually a master’s of science in nursing. However, many CNOs find it helpful to have a second master’s in health administration or a closely related field. At a large teaching hospital or medical facility, candidates may be required to hold a doctorate in nursing. You must also have demonstrated leadership and managerial skills and more than ten years of experience in nursing services and patient care.
